The Brits are calling him a coward and a wimp. A friend of mine’s wife is Russian. They watch Russian TV and they say the Russian’s think Obama is a joke and will be easy to push around. Democrats, if you wonder why your reputation of being pathetic on defense is so bad, all you have to do is look at what’s happening in the Indian Ocean right now. A handful of pirates on a dingy are facing off the US Navy because our government has no balls.

All of our enemies are licking their chops. You’re going to see a lot of Americans and our property attacked in the next 4 years.

Where’s your savior now?

    But honestly, Hud, do you think these pirates are going to let the poor American captain return home in one piece? I have a feeling they’re going to kill him regardless of US action.

    My own personal gut feeling — regardless of what happens to the poor captain — is that we have to make these thugs pay. EXTERMINATE WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE.

    The French Navy and Indian Navy haven’t been fooling around with these guys. They’ve killed a number of them and sunk some ships, too.

    I don’t know that there is another option to deal with the Somali pirates. I don’t honestly think the hijackings will stop until a united naval force — the US and whatever allies we have willing to blow up some ships and pirates — shows them hijacking isn’t worth whatever ransom they think they’re going to get. In this case at least, the French WANT this to stop and WILL cooperate with the US in their best interests. Africa is one of their big trading centers.

    (FYI, native Africans HATE the French with a passion. I knew a fellow from central Africa — who I liked very much — who had very little nice to say about the French. Their continuing cultural arrogance, racism, and colonial history grates on the resident people. On the other hand, he did say the schools introduced into the area and common French language were good byproducts.)

    I just think a few ships and bodies are going to have to be sent to Davy Jones’ locker before some reason sinks into that part of the world. This has been going on for too long now and there should have been an immediate crack-down instead of all this pussyfooting around. I think a few US subs and possibly a carrier battlegroup could have dealt with this a lot quicker, a lot sooner than Big O’s Current Moment of Indecisive Stupidity…

    To be fair to BO, Bush really didn’t deal with this, either, and it’s been going on for years now.

    I would kill the pirates and then go to their port city and shell it. Send a really stark message to them that we’re not putting up with this shit anymore. Find all the mansions the pirates have and bomb them. Apparently that one city the pirates operate out of has lots of mansions and expensive hummers. Etc. Send in some choppers, blow up any hummers they see. Shoot missiles into any mansion. Of course there will be public outcry. Just say that we’ve sent them a response for their actions. Next time we won’t be so friendly.

    We did that in the past with terrorists and it worked. It’s only when we started getting all PC about it that th3ey saw a weakness they could exploit. The fact is these kind of people are completely soulless. They kill without any thought and so they should just be taken out like mad dogs.

    I’m sure some would say we would just be creating more terrorists. The fact is Somalia is a failed state and the provincial government is battled these punks. So we should do them a favor and take them down.

    Many black people fear that any black man elected president would be assassinated. The older ones remember the MLK assassination.

    I don’t think that’s a given in the case of your average politician, but I suspect Obama will be so polarizing he may have that threat hovering over him. After all, people tried to kill Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan too. And there wee some lame attempts at Bush. Presidents are still targets. But Obama is pissing off the rich and powerful and that has all kinds of risks attached. His one saving grace is Biden. Who wants that loon as president?

    Since he’s taken to bow to the King of Saudi Arabia, I’ve taken to calling him الرئيس أوباما And the US Navy shouldn’t just shell that city the Somali Pirates operate out of…something a little more permanent needs to be applied.
    Unfortunately for us, we have a الرئيس who has no balls.

    What they should do is give them the ransom in counterfeit bills. Then as soon as they release the hostages (they have another boat now), blow them away. And like I said,m they should shell the mansions of the pirates.

    I don’t think they should nuke the whole town because a lot of people there are innocent. But the pirates need to be dealt with.

    Regardless of whether they’re fanatics or lawless mercenaries (both bad), the fact is these pirates will not stop hijacking ships until it becomes too risky for them.

    It’s pathetic they’ve been getting away with this for 5 years, BO or no BO. This is a major letdown of the past administration, too… but lest we forget, Democrats don’t deal well in international situations well at all.

    The kidnapped American captain got lucky this weekend. The US Armed Forces were able to save him and he didn’t get a scratch (as far as we know now) and a couple of the hijackers were killed or injured. Both big plusses. But will that really keep the hijackers from trying this once again?

    Let’s not delude ourselves into thinking these people are all reasonable. I still have fresh memories of an American serviceman’s corpse being dragged through a Somali town while the townspeople were cheering.

    There is no strong central government in Somalia. Some tribes (it’s very tribal) are more Islamic than others, others are mercenaries desperate to do anything for hard cash. It’s bad all over.

    So much for the claim we have no legal right to do anything.
    And yeah, I think we need to send along a couple A-10s to hose down every boat on the beach, and keep strafing them as long as necessary until the towns pack up and move elsewhere. (I know the A-10s are overkill, and Apaches would do as well, but the fireworks and sound of those 30mm HE rounds impacting at 3000rpm have wonderful Shock and Awe effects. Actually, a Spooky might be just as good. “The Finger of God” and all that.)
    And I like Jim’s idea of laser guided bombs right in the front window of every “mansion” in the area. Somehow I doubt any of the mansion owners made their money honestly, and this is probably the best long term solution, since after the first beach sweep the pirates will be loading up their boats onto trailers and hiding them in the town.
    Did you notice the NYT spinning for both the Administration and the pirates? My favorite line from the article: “Somali officials said…” Somali OFFICIALS? There isn’t an official anything in that entire place. It’s not even a real country, except to mapmakers. It’s a rough geographic area controlled by local warlords. And the part about the pirates “releasing” the captain…WTF? He jumped, and they got whacked. As usual the NYT is trying to make the bad guys into the victims (“Aww, they released the poor guy and then the mean old SEALs killed them”).
    If we assault the bases, as we MUST DO to succeed, innocent people will be hurt and killed. But I’m sick of various scum hiding among innocents and using it as a “get out of jail/war free” card. This slow rot of dragging war into the American legal system is a disaster and needs to stop.

    A-10 sounds like a very good idea!

    Economical, long-range, best tank-busting, strafing gun ever built for an attack aircraft…

    And to think the Air Force was about to retire these things prior to Gulf War I.

    Odds are that the A-10 will outlast BOTH the F-16 and F-18 in service which were touted as superior systems for close air support. The F-16 and F-18 are both wearing out quicker than originally predicted. The contemporary F-14 has already been retired and it looks like only the F-15C/Es may last in service at least as long as the A-10.

    Neither the F-16 or F-18 (or for that matter, the F-15 to be fair) has the endurance and loitering/station-keeping ability of an A-10. Sure, they’re better for busting up SAM sites because of their superior speed and acceleration but in most low-tech high-conflict sites without SAMs they’re not as good as an A-10 at tank-busting/strafing and certainly can’t take the AAA punishment the A-10 can. The A-10 is almost a flying tank when it comes to absorbing damage! The kind of battle damage an A-10 can live through would turn any supersonic aircraft a falling rock quickly.

    I’ve seen what an A-10 can do to tanks. Instant Swiss cheese! I heard from another fellow aviation enthusiast that the Air Force once conducted a test with chicken meat inside a tank. The force of the A-10′s ammunition rounds ripping through the tank stripped the meat off the chicken bones! I think he said the A-10 gunburst created a mini-vacuum inside the tank for a split-second. Ouch for anybody caught on the other side of an A-10 gunburst. Not a visual image I care to see in photos.
