Google’s Eisner Tribute

Today would have been Will Eisner’s 94th birthday. The creator of the comic, the Spirit has been honored today with a custom Google logo on their website in honor of his birthday. Very cool.

The Spirit was the most entertaining, thoughtful continuing series that Eisner ever did.

It’s also one of the few DC Archives or Masterworks series where I really want to get every last volume. I love the character and his situations that much.

Eisner’s also one of the great comic masters that I regretfully never got a chance to meet and speak with. I’ve really only appreciated The Spirit for the past few years after his his death.

Unlike many other comic book creators of the Golden Age, I’m glad that he wasn’t publicly bitter like a lot of his contemporaries. He had the foresight to keep ownerships on his best creations including The Spirit.

The Spirit is one of those characters that I fear I won’t live to see a decent film adaptation of. Frankly, an animated film with a decent budget would be the best way to realize this character and his world. Just keep Frank Miller and the DC Powers-That-Be away from it!!!

I got to speak to him on several occasions and am lucky enough to have a letter of praise from him on Sinking. His wife worked in psychology and found the book to be very accurate. He was an inspiration to me because he kept doing comics and trying new things as he saw them.
