I went and saw this film out of curiosity this weekend and was glad I did. It’s the story of three teens from a high school in Washington state who discover something strange buried in the ground that gives them telekinetic superpowers. Then it shows what happens to them. It’s done in the “found footage” style of so many films lately, pretending to be cobbled together from home videos and surveillance cameras. It’s really well written and directed. The effects are solid and believable as are the actors who are all unknowns. It’s also a great take on what would happen if people got superpowers in the real world.

If you like comics, then you would likely enjoy this. I did.

Season two should be better than season one, because the books get better, and I love how they’ve been adapting the series. Because a lot of people into Martin seem to like Joe Ambercrombie books I started reading the Blade Itself and am loving it. It’s in a similar vein to the Song of Ice and Fire Books. “Realistic” Fantasy, where the main characters are very flawed, complicated people. What I really love about the book so far is how on target his stuff is about how dysfunctional societies are and it’s somewhat libertarian in its view of the state. Very good stuff. I will be reading all his books I think. It’s right up my alley.

I’ve been using Chrome almost from the start as my browser. It’s been great, But when they started making it like a tablet OS for Chrome Books, they began adding apps like Apple has on its devices. They’ve added a ton of great free apps to Chrome that you can check out from the Chrome store.

This includes lots of games like Angry Birds and Bejeweled 3. Tons of great free tools as well. And Google Books and Kindle cloud reader. Both are places you can get a lot of free books to read on any device.

I’ve really been enjoying Kindle. I’m trying to decide if I want a Kindle Fire or a iPad. I am waiting for the iPad 3 to come out before I decide. I’ve been playing with the Fire in the store, like Staples, and enjoying it but I think I want a larger screen like a iPad has.

What I really like about ebooks is you can carry a whole set of books around on one light device, and pick up where you left off from any other device. I can read a book from home, and go to some other computer elsewhere and carry on reading where I stopped. I’ve been a big proponent of ereaders for many years but I’m finally getting around to really using them.

If you sign up for Amazon Prime which is free the first month, there are tons of free books for you to read including best sellers. Its great. And I downloaded a bunch of collections for $2 like the Robert E Howard and Edgar Rice Burroughs collections which has a whole slew of their work.

MMO games are hot and some new ones coming out look interesting. I played DC Universe Online over the weekend, which you can play for free now, and it was quite good. I rather liked it, but I don’t have time to keep playing. Just wanted to check it out. Having spent a lot of time in the City of Heroes/City of Villains world it’s taken it to another level, especially since they draw on the DC universe story lines in interesting ways. You can explore places in the DC universe that are well known, like the Justice League’s space station or visit Crime Alley where Bruce Wayne’s parents were killed. TEam up with DC Universe heroes and/or villains. And the game is pretty nice looking.

But this new Secret World game has my interest. One of the problems I have with MMOs is that they are oddly dissatisfying while being addictive. It’s always a grind and when you finish a goal you have endless other goals just like it to solve. You feel like you’re on a treadmill of sorts. What interests me about this game is it seems to have taken a new approach to the medium. We’ll see.

One of the best cult films of all time is coming to the states on DVD finally. It wasn’t available here for years. Its been ripped off and imitated by many and never successfully duplicated.

It tells the story of 43 students sent to an island where they each are given random weapons. And 3 days to survive. Only one can live. So it becomes a wild study of human nature. A Lord of the Flies taken to an extreme level. While it does have a lot of violence its extremely well done and entertaining. They manage to tell a very compelling story in a very over the top plot line.
