Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Directed by Brad Bird of The Impossibles fame. He is a James Bond fan if the Impossibles were any indication, so this could be good. Coming this winter

Three Musketeers Trailer

A hell of a lot of CGI and modern sounding dialog. But I love the way it looks.

Reviews: Super 8, The Illusionist, Get Low

I had a chance to go see Super 8 on Sunday and I had a good time. It was a homage to early Speilberg, set around 1980 in a small mid-western town. A train crash is witnessed by kids filming a movie and something escapes from the train. The Air Force comes to reclaim it and all kinds of stuff ensures. It’s basically ET on steroids without being an obvious swipe. The film moves along well and really holds your interest. It has a lot of heart. Fans of the late 70s, early 80s will find it very nostalgic.

I also watched a couple DVDs. The Illusionist is a animated French film from the maker of The Triplets of Bellville. It’s about a failed magician who takes on a small town girl who follows him around. He tries to take care of her but he doesn’t make any money so they struggle while stuck in Edinburgh in the late 1950s. The animation is great and it’s interesting because there is almost no dialog. The story is told through the actions of the people.

Get Low was a recent film with Robert Duvall and Bill Murray, based on the true story of an old hermit who wanted a funeral while he was still alive so he could see what people would say about him. The truth is, he had a confession he wanted to make. It’s set during the 1930s and has an excellent cast which includes Sissy Spacek.

Reviews: Thor, Pirates, Rango

Thor was a decent enough film. Not too much action. The cgi wasn’t nearly as good as X-Men First Class which has excellent work. But the story was a good introduction to Thor with a basic plot that fit in with the average Lee/Kirby era Thor comics. Thor is banished to earth without his powers when he invades a realm without his father Odin’s permission. Loki takes over the kingdom when Odin falls into his Odinsleep. It’s hard to feel too involved in the story though since it’s rather far fetched to say the least. I mean, sure, all superhero movies are far fetched but this one involves a god who comes to earth. And is powerless through most of the story. I’d say it’s a rental not something to see in the theaters.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was a lot more entertaining. Well paced fun and Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane were great in their respective roles. The plot moved along at a good clip but I didn’t laugh or feel too involved. It was entertaining and looked great bu I didn’t feel much connection to anything going on. Kind of like Thor in that respect. I did feel is was the better of the two. But for my money, X-Men first class is the best movie of the three I have seen this summer.

Rango is excellent even though the story is blatantly swiped from Chinatown. It’s amusing and the animation is great stuff. I especially loved the cameo by Clint Eastwood as The Man With No Name. It’s a light movie over all, simple story, but Depp is really good at playing goofy heroes.

Review: X-Men First Class

I saw the film today and was totally impressed. One of the best comic book adaptations ever. It tells the story how the X-Men came to be. How Charles Xavier met Magneto. How the Hellfire Club tried to start World War III. Eric Fastbender as Magneto was tremendous. He was arguably the hero of the film. A very cool anti-hero. You have no problem sympathizing with him as he hunts down the evil nazi scientist (Sebastian Shaw) who experimented on him as a child. While they took some liberties with the X-Men origin, they actually improved upon it and stayed very faithful to it for the most part.

It was thoroughly enjoyable.
