Game of Thrones
Season two should be better than season one, because the books get better, and I love how they’ve been adapting the series. Because a lot of people into Martin seem to like Joe Ambercrombie books I started reading the Blade Itself and am loving it. It’s in a similar vein to the Song of Ice and Fire Books. “Realistic” Fantasy, where the main characters are very flawed, complicated people. What I really love about the book so far is how on target his stuff is about how dysfunctional societies are and it’s somewhat libertarian in its view of the state. Very good stuff. I will be reading all his books I think. It’s right up my alley.
Comic Book Men
Kevin Smith sold a reality show about comic book stores.
Justified Season 3
It’s back this month on FX. Great show. I you havent it before watched now’s your time to start. Its a very good crime drama from writer Elmore Leonard and has the feel of his stories.
Breaking Bad Season 4
It starts Sunday, July 17th! This is my favorite series running today.
Game of Thrones
Saw it and loved it. They did an amazing job translating such a vast fantasy story to the small screen. It looked epic.
The changes they made were minimal and mainly to cover for the fact that they could not do characters internal monologues which are a huge part of the books. There was more nudity and sex than I remember in the books, but they were setting up the world and showing that this is not Lord of the Rings. Some people call it The Sopranos with Swords. I see it more like James Ellroy Meets King Arthur. Anyway, it was an excellent start. I’ll be interested to see how it’s received.
American Idol Top 8
To me, the performance I loved best tonight was by Casey Abrams, for several reasons. It went against the grain, he gave it his unique spin and he was true to himself.
Scott was also good, Stefano, Lauren were also decent. But I think Paul and Jacob are getting repetitive. Even though I love Blondie and think Haley was OK, it wasn’t great. James was fun. Another one who went with what he wanted to do. But it was kind of the same as his other performances. Casey is the one artist who changes up the most and tries to be different while staying true to himself. Scotty is great at what he does, and I suspect he will be in the top 2.
My guess is Jacob, Paul and Haley in the bottom 3 tomorrow. Paul or Jacob may go,. Even though the judges praised Jacob to high heaven, he is laying it on too thick. I notice on some of the boards people are getting tired of him too. He’s a great singer but he over sings every song.
UPDATE: I was wrong about Jacob. But I picked this week’s loser. He was just not showing enough range and variety, but I am sure he will go on to some kind of success. I was glad to see Casey make it to another week. My feeling is the final three will be Scott, Casey and either Jacob or James. Lauren is also a possible for the final 3. Scott is probably the one to beat.
Game of Thrones: Poison
This trailer really gives a nice sense of the story not seen in other trailers. Plus a shot of King’s Landing at the start and Cersei acting like Cersei. Can’t wait for Sunday.
Game of Thrones: Behind the Scenes
A really nice extended look at the behind the scenes of the new HBO series on a week from Sunday. The books are fantastic. Can’t recommend them enough.
American Idol Top 9
No one comments on these American Idol posts so I don’t know if anyone who visits this site cares, but this season is by far the best. None of the finalists are bad. They are all very good to great. Often the judges have nothing to say but that they were impressed by the performances. No one who leaves from this point on will be expected. But tonight, one of the best went home. Pia Toscano. She could sing like she was a new Celine Dion or Whitney Houston. She looks great. She always hits it out of the park. I think she was a victim of her own success. She was so perfect that people probably thought she didn’t need their votes. I certainly thought she was going to be in the top three. But she was also kind of the same every week, so people probably got bored with her.
Now there are only two women left. And at this rate I wouldn’t be surprised if they were vulnerable, though neither was in the bottom three this week. Haley Reinhart has come into her own. Her version of the Janis Joplin classic “Take a Little Piece of my Heart” was like the second coming of Janis. Lauren Alaina has probably become popular with the teens. She is an amazing talent on her own. Her cover of Natural Woman was very good. Even though Jacob Lusk is arguably the best singer they ever had, he’s kind of like Pia in that he is almost too good. So I suspect he may get it next week or the week after. He also made a very foolish comment by taking on Man in the Mirror, but claiming that if he’s in the bottom three its because America can’t look themselves in the mirror. D’oh! Guess who was in the bottom three. Aside from the fact that this was rock week and it’s a soft Michael Jackson song, that was stupid. Like Pia, Jacob is kind of predictable in that he is always so good it becomes rather safe. The people who try different things like Casey may have a better shot at winning.
Speaking of Casey, he chose a perfect song this week by doing Credence Clearwater Revival’s “Have you Ever Seen the Rain”. His voice is similar to John Fogarty’s, but by playing it on a stand up bass he showed himself to be a true original. I think America really loves the guy now since he seems very humble despite his real talent.
UPDATE: Pia got a contract already with Interscope, Jimmy Iovine’s company. They snapped her right up.
Mildred Pierce
I decided to check out the HBO miniseries which stars Kate Winslet in the role Joan Crawford made famous. It’s based on the James M. Cain novel about a single mother during the great depression who is raising two daughters while trying to run her own business and her older daughter starts giving her major problems. It’s really a tremendous piece of work. The acting, production values, music of the period are all spot on. I highly recommend it.
James M. Cain was one of the best crime novelists of his day. He wrote great stories about believable characters. The Postman Always Rings Twice is one of his more famous tales. I came in late to the series but was able to catch up. If you missed the first 3 episodes, I am sure they will repeat them or they will be on Netflix in a few months.
The Governator Trailer
Not satisfied with being a terrible governor and sell out, Arnold rips off Batman. Awesome. So long as I don’t hear about Global Warming.
